Today I sit here in the quiet of my room and stare at pictures of Joey. He would be three years old today. I'll never forget the day he was born, being there to hold my daughter's hand, to give comfort and encouragement as she brought this sweet little boy into the world.
Joey was one of those kids that was always smiling, laughing and just plain happy. I am a very fortunate to be his Grandma.
I look at all the pictures, I watch videos, I listen to songs that remind me of him. I can't look at a giraffe or at Elmo without thinking of Joey. Even Cheerios remind me of him - because of a memory of his Elmo and snack cup full of Cheerios laying on the floor - with Cheerios in Elmo's mouth. I guess Elmo needed a snack as well.
We'll gather together today to celebrate Joey's life, to celebrate his birthday with some cake and release balloons to heaven for him. We will talk of him, we will laugh, we will cry, we will hug one another and we will turn our faces towards Heaven and sing Happy Birthday.
It is heartbreaking to have to celebrate a child's life in this way, we should be putting up decorations, wrapping presents and readying the house for the arrival of family and friends. However, I would rather celebrate this way than to have never had Joey in our lives. This little boy means the world to us and will be forever loved by so many.
And one day, some day, we will tell all of Joey's story. His short life meant a lot to those who knew and loved him. His legacy will mean a lot to so many more. His life had purpose, his death shall too.
If you think of it today, please take a moment and wish our Joey a happy birthday.
Hug your children, love them and cherish them. Get down on the floor and play with them. Celebrate them each and every day. The small accomplishments and the big ones. And kiss them once for me.
With love
